World Flying Community Off-Topic Discussion (Part 19)

Unlike Europe we have a mildly car-centric environment so we were able to accommodate such larger vehicles

I get the US is based around cars (I go to uni there, I’ve seen the redneck pickups) but I don’t bet the appeal of a stupid large car that does the same thing as a smaller car but fits into less space and roads.

the cyber truck is also ugly as sin but it works in fortnite I guess

Breeze E195AR near me. Going to POS

Probably going to Juegosland.

@PlanesAndGames you good bud? A plane crashed on São Paulo…

probably because range and amount of facilities here

This isn’t necessarily a new thing. Just take a look at the land yachts from the 50s, 60s and 70s.

It partially comes down to the land scape of where these cars were designed; Detroit. It’s a flat, large city with mostly straight high speed roads. This means there isn’t a need for short wheelbases to get around tight corners. Longer wheelbases also allow for a smoother, more stable ride at high speed.
This is true for the vast majority of the country. The US is flat, and open pretty much everywhere. The only places where these larger vehicles are old cities like downtown Boston or San Francisco.

The biggest reason for the big vehicles though is governmental regulations.

Fuel efficiency requirements here are based on the area of a vehicles. The bigger the area, the lower the minimum fuel economy required. This is the reason why small trucks like mine can’t be sold here anymore. A similarly sized truck would need to achieve ~50mpg. This incentivizes bigger vehicles as the manufacturer isn’t being fined for being under the minimum requirement. It’s the same story for cars, but even more extreme hence why everything gets classified as a “light truck” here (a Subaru Crosstrek most definitely isn’t a truck).
The other reason regarding governmental regulations is safety features. We have stricter crash requirements here than other countries meaning more reinforcements and airbags need to be fitted, which take up space and add weight. We also require driver aids such as cameras, ABS, and collision prevention/auto braking.

It’s a complex web of regulations, advertisement campaigns, and corporate bottom lines.

Takes about 30 seconds to read if you learned how to properly skim.

Just witnessed a flock of twin otters take off, one of which had to return to my airport and make an emergency landing.

Oh yeah @barbadian there’s an AA MD-80 approaching your airport. /s
